Description
This illustration is part of a series depicting the repair of proximal hypospadias, showcasing a step 2 STAC or step 3 STAG repair. Hypospadias is a condition where the urethra is located below the tip of the glans, which can lead to various sexual and urinary issues as the individual matures. Typically, this condition is addressed in newborns through surgical intervention.
In this illustration, I focus on the creation of a neourethra using skin from the ventral side of the penis, detailing the suturing techniques used to close the incision. Other steps of the procedure are presented diagrammatically, providing a comprehensive overview of the surgical process.
This artwork was formatted for a full-page journal.
Illustrating the Surgery
I had the opportunity to attend a variety of hypospadias surgeries at Johns Hopkins University, where I took detailed visual notes. Following these observations, I conducted extensive research on the condition and standard surgical procedures. I then created sketches to illustrate each step of the surgery.
To ensure accuracy, I met with the surgeon to confirm both the surgical techniques and anatomical details. After refining the sketches, I formatted them for publication in a journal.
